3DS can connect to Internet, but not other players over Internet

I've been having a difficult time with my 3DS, because for some reason, it wont connect to other players over the internet at my currrent location. It can connect to the internet just fine, but when I try to connect to another player in a game, I always get the same results:
The same three or four names will appear (normally this list is a lot longer) on the list of players I can connect to, and if I were try to connect to any one of them, I'll get a lengthy loading screen, followed by an error message. This only happens at my current home, for whatever reason, as I've had luck connecting in other areas which leads me to believe it's an issue with my router. I've already tried manualy finding the DNS with my connection settings, so I don't know what to do anymore, and I can't play games with my friends online until I get this fixed. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
