3DS crashed after updating

I have a 3DS that has crashed after applying an update over the weekend. It's one of the original 3DS's, so it is included in the ambassador program.

After applying the update, system showed that the update was complete, it then restarted.

After the restart, all system icons were gone, the only icons showing was the game cartridge in the system and two folders that had been set up previously, one for demos and one for games that have been downloaded from the store. When I try to access the system settings, or any icons at the top of the touchscreen, the system freezes and I need to hold down the power button for a few seconds until the system turns off. I have tried taking out the game cartrige and the memory card (in case the memory card was corrupt), when the system was off, but the system still has no icons on the touchscreen and still freezes when trying to access the system settings or any of the other functions.

Is there anyway of doing a system reset or restore? If there is will it set back factory default? I'm worried about losing purchases connected to my system since purchases from the eshop are connected to my system.

I also noticed that the system does not actually shut down completely, it enters sleep mode and there doesn't seem to be a way of actually turning it completely off.

UPDATE: Actually this is something that happened just before I was going to post the above information. I picked up the 3DS and powered it on to see if anything had changed, maybe elves had snuck in when I wasn't looking to fix it or something. Anyway, I opened the system and the icons were all there. I put the system back into sleep mode and inserted the SD card and opened the system again. I then tried playing a demo, which worked but when I exited the demo by pressing HOME then X, the system when back to the menu screen and all icons had disappeared once again. The system will then freeze when trying again after trying the system icons at the top of the touchscreen.

Once again after powering off the system then turning it back on the icons were gone, but closing the lid to put the system into sleep mode, then opening it again after a minute will bring up all icons and the system works again until exiting a program.

Sorry that this is so long winded, but I'm stumped. I'm glad it's semi-working but I would l some advice about what the heck is going on and how to fix it. I also double checked the update ver. which is 9.2.0-20U.
