Setting the 3DS Down = Turns Off

I recently purchased a Pearl Pink 3DS for 130,00$ from The Source in Canada in March 2014.

I was playing Pokemon X (as per usual; physical copy) and had just finished breeding a 5IV4EM Zangoose. I went into my kitchen to turn off the lights for bedtime and set my 3DS down on the counter. Just like that, the screen went black and the power light turned off.

Now, I know it's fully charged, because I charged it overnight and turning it back on reveals a full battery.

So I was curious. I was on the Home screen and set my 3DS down on my desk. It didn't turn off right away, but when I set it down on its right side, it turned off without a sound. It seems that something on the front right corner of the console is causing the 3DS to turn off automatically. Again, no sound is heard; it just goes black and all the lights turn off.

I don't have a screwdriver that's so teeny, teeny tiny as this, so I can't open up the back and try reseating the battery or anything.

I'm frustrated because I lost my breeding efforts, but also because I just purchased this not even four months ago and it's acting up. I bought an Aqua Blue 3DS a few months after release and it's still going strong.

What do I do? What can I do? If Nintendo is forced to repair it, how long will it take to repair, and will they reimburse shipping (could be 10-20$, jeez)? Will they give me back a Coral Pink 3DS or is it possible I get some other colour? I bought this one and gave my blue one to my boyfriend because I liked the pink one.

What are your suggestions? I called Nintendo today for repair, but lo' and behold, being in Canada "July 4th" means nothing to me and everything to the country below, so no one picked up as it is a holiday lol
